The latest Zelda entry redefined how open-world games should feel, look, and behave. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime masterpiece, so finding games like Breath of the Wild is not an easy task. Even though it’s a Nintendo Switch exclusive, Breath of the Wild is one of the most friendly Zelda games for newcomers. Instead of being part of one of the three complicated timelines in the series, it is rather at the end of either timeline. So, effectively, it doesn’t truly follow the storylines or rules of previous entries. Casual Zelda fans can enter and understand without issue. We’re talking about the story, though. The world, the mechanics, and the pacing is on another level, vastly different from most AAA open-world games. Before selecting games like Breath of the Wild, we needed to understand the elements of the Nintendo exclusive. In essence, we believe BotW fans would love games featuring a mix or a tweak of the following elements Genre The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild is an action-adventure open-world sandbox game. Open-world design The world has no markers, set goals, and boundaries. The map is also full of secrets, temples, treasures, hidden areas, and Link’s limitation is the “Stamina Wheel.” It determines how long he can climb, run, swing, glide, sprint, and spin-attack. Quest design The game starts with a quest, defeating Ganondorf. There’re no indications of how to do Similarly, players can approach the main quest, and the game itself, with massive freedom. A Zelda game has a compelling enough story to push forward, rather than hanging around the open world forever. Games like Breath of the Wild should feature similar freedom. Yet, it should have something extra, something amazing to keep you coming back. For example, Breath of the Wild features an outstanding soundtrack that ties everything together. Games Like Breath Of The Wild Horizon Forbidden West Horizon Forbidden West - Cinematic Trailer PS5, PS4 Developer Guerrilla Games Publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment Release Date February 2022 PlatformPS4, PS5 Horizon Zero Dawn is one of the best games for PS4. Many would consider it a perfect entry in the open-world action-adventure RPG genre. The second entry, the first major PS5 2022 exclusive, seems even better. The sequel develops Alloy as less of a one-note character and dives deeper into a full-on sci-fi setting. The graphics, performance, mechanics, and music are also a massive improvement upon the first. That said, Forbidden West is a massive open-world title. It also focuses on exploration, as you have to roam around the map to find gear, scraps to craft, and creatures to hunt for parts. There’s also a glider, as well as swimming mechanics. As before, it’s also a Monster Hunter game in disguise. Each mechanic monster requires a different strategy and features various weaknesses. The weapon variety is wide, the melee abilities are better, and the skill threes are varied. Overall, the Forbidden West features an interesting world free of clutter and unnecessary filler. The game rewards your exploration with lore, great side content, and gear. Immortals Fenyx Rising Developer Ubisoft Quebec Publisher Ubisoft Release Date December 2020 PlatformWindows, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series Ubisoft intended to make a similar game, as the Nintendo exclusive was their main inspiration. That said, Fenyx Rising is also an open-world action-adventure sandbox game. The game follows Fenyx, a mortal man stranded in the realm of the Gods. He must stop Typhon, an evil from the underworld, to save humanity. The story happens alongside a narration that feels humorous and light-hearted cell-shaded graphics. Then, there’s the open world. There’re markers for the quests, but you have to discover the rest of the secrets. You can do so by exploring or using your Far Sight ability. The world hides treasures, gear, temples, bosses, puzzles, and more. Combat starts basic and then evolves by unlocking Godly Skills, traversal moves, weapons, defensive abilities, combos, and wings to glide! Nevertheless, it relies on a block/dodge/parry/light attack/heavy attack/ranged attack system. Lastly, the world has various areas, and you have to complete the main quest on each in any order. However, your limitation is your stamina and combat prowess. You need to improve your character by finding the right items along the way. Outer Wilds Developer Mobius Digital Publisher Annapurna Interactive Release Date May 2019 PlatformPS4, Xbox One, Windows, Nintendo Switch If you’re looking for the ultimate open-world sandbox, Outer Wilds is the game to pick. It’s one of the most relevant and praised indies in recent times. Outer Wilds is an open world with no markers and a single quest. It’s a time loop game that resets the world to default every time you don’t solve the mystery, like Zelda Majora’s Mask. You’re a recruit of the Outer Wilds Ventures, a space program. Your job is solving the mystery that keeps a solar system in a time loop. You’re free to do it your own way, though, and you can try it as many times as you want. But as you explore a massive solar system full of planets and hazards, you’ll uncover more secrets and information. Every clue you pick up can lead you to solve the one puzzle you need to solve. That said, the game has no combat. Instead, it’s an exploration-driven game full of puzzles and hidden locations. Moreover, areas can change with the day/night cycle of the game. Halo Infinite Developer 343 Industries Publisher Xbox Game Studios Release Date December 2021 PlatformXbox One, Xbox Series, Windows Halo Infinite added sandbox elements to a long-running franchise to breathe new life. It’s the same case as Zelda, and it also relies on a hefty physics engine. Moreover, it has one of the series’s best plots and shooting mechanics. The latest Halo game offers its multiplayer portion for free and enables cross-play between Steam and Xbox Store players. The campaign sells for the AAA standard fee, though. We’re talking about the campaign, mostly. It’s the first open-world map in the series, and it asks players to use every tool to survive. In particular, players need to rotate weapons constantly to defeat different enemy types. There’re also vehicles to traverse the land and plenty of physics manipulation features. For example, there’re gravity canons, hoovering vehicles, or grenades capable of propelling bodies and crates. Lastly, the plot follows Master Chief confronting a new foe, the Harbinger. At the same time, the Spartan is dealing with the betrayal of Cortana, his AI assistant, who joined forces against humanity with her creation in Halo 5. Kena Bridge of Spirits Developer Ember Lab Publisher Ember Lab Release Date September 2021 PlatformPS4, PS5, Windows Bridge of Spirits is an indie game that feels, looks, and behaves like AAA games. It’s also as magical, expansive, and cute as Breath of the Wild fans expect. Moreover, it relies on similar mechanics. This is an action-adventure semi-open-world title. You play as Kena, a young spirit guide who wields magical abilities to heal the spirit world. sS such, she has a staff for melee and ranged attacks. The combat evolves as the game progresses. Kena unlocks weapons, dashes, gadgets, and combos to defeat progressively complex enemies. The action gameplay is familiar, but the performance is flawless. That said, the game is significantly shorter than Breath of the Wild. Kena is a condensed, 40 hours mostly linear experience. Yet, the world still encourages exploration, and there’s also plenty of lore to see. Lastly, the game features a light-hearted story and cell-shaded graphics as well. Its fictional tale is original, though, and it centers on collecting spirit companions she must lead to the afterlife. Sable Sable Launch Trailer Developer Shedworks Publisher Raw Fury Release Date September 2021 PlatformXbox One, Xbox Series, Windows Sable is another indie title. As Breath of the Wild focuses on exploration, it delivers a rich open-world and presents action-adventure mechanics. Its art style and story make it quite unique. You play as Sable as she goes through the Gliding, a rite of passage. It’s a journey that takes her across deserts, ancient wonders, and derelict spaceships. It happens through a third-person perspective, in a hand-drawn world. The gameplay is about exploring stylized dunes with your hoverbike. You can also climb, glide, interact with other nomads, help other tribes, and uncover the mystery of a long-gone civilization. All the while, players will uncover the mystery of Sable, who always uses a mask. Speaking of which, you can customize your mask and your outfits with collectibles you find. Similarly, you can customize your glider. Lastly, the game has a unique art style and an original soundtrack by the Japanese band Breakfast. Overall, it’s an immersive, story-driven, and exploration-based experience Zelda fans would love. Developer Game Freak Publisher Nintendo, The Pokemon Company Release Date January 2022 PlatformNintendo Switch Arceus is an action-RPG game. It’s part of the eighth generation of the series, and it’s a prequel to Diamond and Pearl 2006 and the 2008 Pokemon Platinum. The plot is easy enough for newcomers to understand, though. The entry takes a few steps away from the classical formula. It doesn’t have the open-world freedom Breath of the Wild offers, but it’s a game both Pokemon and Zelda fans would enjoy. Even so, the world is semi-open, and the areas are wide to encourage exploration. The game has 5 zones featuring wild pokemon, enemy trainers, hidden items, secrets, and other dangers. Another new element is how players can ride certain Pokemons to travel faster, swim, climb, or fly. Additionally, the game introduces “Alpha” Pokemons, larger and more powerful versions in the wild. Overall, Arceus packs significant new features while using a wider world than usual. It also features a more complex turn-based RPG battle system, multiple endings, and 242 Pokemons. Super Mario Odyssey Developer Nintendo EDP Publisher Nintendo Release Date October 2017 PlatformNintendo Switch The Switch was released alongside Breath of the Wild in 2017. A few months later, Super Mario Odyssey debuted. It became another classic title with a successful modern and creative formula like its Zelda counterpart. Super Mario Odyssey is a platform game. You control Mario across various interconnected Kingdoms. Altogether, it represents a wild open world with no markers but full of platforming puzzles and color. The plot is about rescuing Princess Peach from Bowser. The dragon is looking to marry her by force. Mario uses his hat-shaped ship, Odyssey, to find the Power Moons across the Kingdoms and find the princess. Its gameplay happens in 3D and features a mix of old and new. Mario can jump, double jump, triple jump, and wall jump. His spirit hat, Cappy, also offers multiple attacks and traversal skills. For example, it temporarily captures enemy abilities. That said, the game is rich in platforming puzzles and challenging enemies. Likewise, Mario can improve his HP by finding “Life-Up Hearts.” Lastly, as far as features go, a co-op mode allows other players to control Cappy. The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim Developer Bethesda Game Studios Publisher Bethesda Softworks Release Date November 2011 PlatformWindows, PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch Breath of the Wild focuses on exploration, a way of giving players the freedom to play the game. Skyrim did the same many years ago, but, luckily, it’s still a relevant game, with over 20K concurrent daily players on Steam. Skyrim stands as one of the best open-world immersive RPGs in the industry. And even though it has a great emphasis on the story, and a hefty plot to follow, it also rewards players immense freedom. The plot happens 2,000 years after Oblivion, in Tamriel. You play as the Dragonborn, and your destiny is defeating Alduin the World-Eater, a dangerous dragon. There’re also various expansions with new areas and enemies. You unlock Dragonborn skills and develop skills across dozens of trees along the journey. You can also explore the world at your will for any task, sub-plot, or main-story path you desire. The amount of things it offers is staggering. Aside from dozens of builds, you can become a thief, a vampire, a werewolf, craft, trade, dungeon-crawl, and more. Moreover, there’re hundreds of mods available for further customization. Genshin Impact Developer miHoYo Publisher miHoYo Release Date September 2020 PlatformAndroid, iOS, Windows, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch Genshin Impact is an open-world, free-to-play RPG game. The art style and the world design are similar to Breath of the Wild, but the mechanics belong to another genre. In specific, Genshin is a “Gacha” game. That means it relies on unlocking characters, like Pokemons, to use in battle. You unlock characters by spending in-game currency. Then, each hero features different abilities and elemental powers. You can swap heroes during combat at any time, so it’s important to mix and match elemental abilities for greater effects. Moreover, many feature unique progression systems. The open world is cartooney and good-looking. It’s also vast and full of treasures, puzzles, secrets, and enemies. But aside from finding currencies and gear, you can also follow the main quest. Overall, Genshin Impact is an addictive, fast-paced title. Lastly, its micro-transaction stores won’t hold your progress until reaching a certain point. Afterward, though, it may slow down your progress. The Witcher 3 The Wild Hunt Developer CD Projekt Red Publisher CD Projekt Red Release Date May 2015 PlatformWindows, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch The Witcher 3 is an open-world action-adventure RPG. Compared to Breath of the Wild, it’s a darker, angrier, and deeper game. It’s also more cinematic and features an equally amazing soundtrack. You play as Geralt the Rivia, searching for Ciri, his surrogate daughter. The main plot is thrilling and takes Geralt across the various areas of a vast open world. Ultimately, the quest takes the heroes to face an ancient elven evil. However, the side quests are equally compelling and fully-fledged. Players can get lost in the hours of side content the game offers. The world is massive, full of interactive NPCs, stories, and sights to see. The fighting system is familiar as well. It relies on dodges, parries, blocks, attacks, gadgets, and magical skills. Geralt does have more classical skill trees and skill points to develop over time. Overall, The Witcher 3 is an epic, cinematic game that ties multiple storylines together. It’s a widely recognized title that rivals BotW in the number of boundaries it pushes. Oceanhorn Monster of Uncharted Seas Developer Cornfox & Bros. Publisher FDG Entertainment Release Date November 2013 PlatformiOS, Android, Windows, macOS, PS4, PSVita, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch Oceanhorn is a 2013 action-adventure game that looks familiar. It uses elements from the most cartoony Zelda games, like Wind Waker, but it’s an easier and simpler title overall. Many consider it as a Zelda knockoff. Still, it’s a popular mobile game featuring surprisingly complex mechanics for the platform to this day. Moreover, you can play a portion of the game for free. Oceanhorn features a 3D cell-shaded world, where a character answers a call to heroism. The protagonists go through a series of interconnected maps to follow the story, unlock gear, and learn new abilities. Players explore dungeons, fight monsters, and solve puzzles. The game features various weapons, plus the ability to throw pots and cut bushes for hidden coins. That said, you play from a top-down perspective and travel interconnected areas. Lastly, the game features gorgeous music and a compelling story. Even though it feels like a shameless Zelda copycat, it also has merits. For example, the island design is lovely. Oceanhorn 2 Knights of the Lost Realm Developer Cornfox & Bros. Publisher FDG Entertainment Release Date October 2020 PlatformNintendo Switch, PS5, Xbox Series, PS4, Xbox One, Apple Arcade Oceanhorn 2 is a prequel to the first game, as the story happens 1,000 years before the previous plot. It’s light-hearted, cartoony, familiar, but not at all innovative. The plot has you collecting relics worldwide to face an ancient evil. It’s a good story that introduces companion characters. The story doesn’t overstay its welcome, and it does an effective job of taking you from one quest to another. The design, mechanics, and graphics follow Breath of the Wild. Moreover, the battle system relies on sword attacks, spells, and using items in creative ways. Oceanhorn 2 also evolves the gameplay but still feels familiar and easy. As before, and like Link, the hero has no name, no voice, and likes to smash pots for coins and jewels. Overall, Oceanhorn is a semi-open world game where you explore the world for puzzles, treasure, and the occasional combat. However, there’s no way to lock-down targets, and the AI companions rarely help in the heat of battle.

The Legend of Zelda is one of the most critically acclaimed series of all time, rivaled only by the likes of Super Mario and Grand Theft Auto. Consequently, the series' Nintendo exclusivity is a source of frustration for many gamers. Thankfully, the variety in playstyle between many of Link's adventures, along with the huge catalog of games available on PC, means that there are many PC games similar to Zelda. Although there are plenty of straight-up Zelda clones out there, most of them are just rip-offs that aren't worth playing. All of the entries on this list, however, are great games in their own right, despite having numerous differences from the Zelda franchise. Updated June 12, 2022, by Jack Pursey PC gamers have been treated in recent years to numerous games and series that were once exclusive. Virtually every Xbox exclusive is now on PC, and Sony is finally getting in on the act too, with games like God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn losing their PlayStation loyalty badges and reaching new audiences. Despite this, PC gamers, understandably, have very little hope that Nintendo will ever bring their iconic franchises to their favorite system. Thankfully, there's no shortage of excellent games like Zelda on Steam or other PC platforms, so we've updated this list to include a few more entries. 18 Elden Ring It's not often that a game - or any piece of media for that matter - is able to live up to expectations when it's the most highly-anticipated release of its year. FromSoftware managed to pull off the impossible, though, by creating an RPG of such incredible size and scope that it blew away even some of the most optimistic of fans. Elden Ring is comfortably on the Breath of the Wild side of the Zelda gameplay scale, with its enormous open world that is packed with things to do and enemies to defeat. 17 Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion There aren't many lists where Elden Ring and Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion would both qualify. One is a 100+ hour RPG epic that pushes boundaries of scale and magnitude in gaming, while the other can be finished before breakfast. Still, Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion deserves a spot on this list, as while the game was never going to be a game of the year contender, it's still a thoroughly enjoyable 2-3 hour adventure that has a great sense of humor and memorable cast of characters. The gameplay struggles to impress at times, though Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion is still a great option for those wanting a light-hearted take on the Link to the Past formula. 16 Tunic Another game clearly inspired by A Link to the Past is Tunic, an action-adventure game from indie developer Andrew Shouldice that was released in March 2022. The game is currently available on Xbox and PC, though the game will also be arriving on PS4 and PS5 in September 2022. Games trying to replicate the success of A Link to the Past is a tale as old as time, though Tunic still managed to impress fans and critics, exemplified by its 85 critic score and user score on Metacritic. Like Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion, Tunic is currently available on Microsoft's value-for-money Game Pass service, giving players the chance to try it and no extra cost. 15 Immortals Fenyx Rising Ubisoft's Immortals Fenyx Rising is a great option for those who want a similar experience to the most recent main series Legend of Zelda game, the aforementioned Breath of the Wild. While Immortals Fenyx Rising has more in-game help and hand-holding than Breath of the Wild, its wonderfully designed island filled with puzzles and activities to complete makes it comparable. Interestingly, the concept for the game was formulated when a bug occurred during the development of Assassin's Creed Odyssey. 14 Genshin Impact MiHoYo's Genshin Impact debuted on PlayStation 4, PC, and mobile devices in 2020, with PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch releases planned for the future. The game has been an enormous commercial success, with its generated income en route to surpassing one billion dollars in the coming months. Genshin Impact is an open-world, action role-playing game that takes place in Teyvat, a fantasy world consisting of seven nations. The game allows players to control a party of four characters that can be quickly interchanged, allowing for devastating combat combinations. 13 Prince of Persia The Sands of Time In 2003, the year that Prince of Persia The Sands of Time was released, the gaming industry was in a transitional phase. The industry was moving away from the mascot platformers that had been popular in the '90s and turning to more realistic action franchises that were now possible thanks to the improved capabilities of the sixth generation of home consoles. Ubisoft decided to lean into this transitional phase by offering players the best of both worlds with Prince of Persia The Sands of Time, an action-adventure-platforming hybrid. Much like the Legend of Zelda franchise, the game's combination of genres feels well thought out rather than thrown together. 12 Anodyne Anodyne was developed by Melos Han-Tani and Marina Kittaka and published by Analgesic Productions, the same studio that released 2016's Even the Ocean. The game doesn't hide that it was influenced by The Legend of Zelda franchise, boasting surreal dream world and action-puzzle gameplay similar to Link's Awakening. The game received a warm reception on Steam and currently has an All Reviews mark of Very Positive. Analgesic Productions released a sequel to the game in 2019 titled Anodyne 2 Return to Dust which is also worth checking out. 11 Undertale 2D RPG Undertale was released in 2015 on PC, before coming to other major systems in the subsequent years, including Xbox One and Xbox Series X as recently as March 2021, debuting on Microsoft's Game Pass service. The game has numerous unique spins on common RPG elements, such as letting players try to befriend enemies instead of being forced to fight them. Undertale was a huge hit with critics. The game's Metascores range from 92 and 93, reflecting Undertale's impeccable quality. 10 The Binding of Isaac The Binding of Isaac offers gameplay similar to Link's earliest adventures, such as the original Legend of Zelda and A Link to the Past. Key similarities include the top-down perspective and the multitude of dungeons to conquer. The game differentiates itself from its Zelda counterpart with its procedurally generated dungeons and dark tone that takes inspiration from the biblical story of the same name. 9 Dark Souls Whereas The Binding of Issac has similarities to Zelda's oldest titles, Dark Souls is comparable to the most recent main-series game, Breath of the Wild. Furthermore, Dark Souls differentiates itself from others on this list, as whereas most took inspiration from Zelda, Breath of the Wild took inspiration from Dark Souls. This is particularly apparent in Breath of the Wild's lore-based story-telling that players must seek out to find and parry-centric combat. The inspirations aren't just one way, though, as Dark Souls, like many games, has numerous mechanics that were inspired by the revolutionary Ocarina of Time. FromSoftware's Hidetaka Miyazaki, the creator of Dark Souls, responded to the comparisons between the games, saying that he felt FromSoftware's franchise was "unworthy" of being compared to the Zelda series. 8 Ittle Dew 2 Ittle Dew 2 strands players on an island and requires them to obtain eight pieces of a raft before they can leave. The game focuses predominantly on the adventure puzzling elements that are prominent in Zelda games, as well as throwing many enemies at players to defeat, including bosses at the end of dungeons. Unfortunately, the game had numerous issues due to differences between the game's developer and publisher, resulting in it being taken off of many digital platforms. Thankfully, the game is currently still available to play on Steam and Switch as it was self-published on the two stores. 7 Hyper Light Drifter Hyper Light Drifter was developed and published by Heart Machine and started life on Kickstarter. Following a lucrative campaign, the game made its way to PC in March 2016. The 2D adventure game is a throwback to the 16-bit era and is an ideal choice for those looking for an experience similar to A Link to The Past or A Link Between Worlds. The indie game was well received by both fans and critics, evidenced by its 84 Metascore and User Score. 6 Fable Fable is a great choice for players who are looking for a 3D Zelda-like experience but with a heavier focus on role-playing mechanics. The game differentiated itself from the competition in 2004 with its implementation of the alignment feature. The alignment feature added weight to the player's in-game decisions, awarding them either good or evil points depending on their actions. Alignment mechanics are commonplace in RPGs today, but it was a unique feature back in the mid-2000s 5 Beyond Good and Evil The cult classic Beyond Good & Evil offers one of gaming's best puzzle adventures. Puzzle-solving isn't all that players will be tasked with, though, as they'll have to sharpen their platforming and stealth skills if they want to keep Jade alive. The game was originally intended to be the first entry in a trilogy. However, poor sales put subsequent projects on the backburner. Five years after the game's initial release, a teaser trailer was shown at Ubidays, although talk of a sequel died down shortly after. Finally, in E3 2017, a prequel was officially announced. 4 Kamiko Skipmore's Kamiko is the last game on this list that will appeal to fans of Link's top-down perspective adventures like A Link Between Worlds and A Link to the Past. The game isn't particularly long, but it crams a lot into its short runtime. Kamiko has a heavier focus on action than its Zelda counterpart, exemplified by the combo meter that keeps the arcade-like action interesting. The game was originally released on Nintendo Switch, receiving a Metascore of 74 before coming to PC in mid-2019. 3 Psychonauts Similar to Beyond Good and Evil, Psychonauts is a mid-2000s cult classic adventure game that recently delighted fans with the announcement of a long-awaited sequel. Psychonauts leans heavily into its unique theme of psychic abilities. Nintendo's lovable mascot Link and his trusty steed Epona are replaced by Death, one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse, and his intimidating horse named Despair. The game leans into the hack and slash genre, with players able to use scythes, axes, maces, and much more to take down their foes. Depuis, Nintendo nous a rassurés sur son développement avec de courtes déclarations, mais rien de concret n'a vraiment été dit... jusqu'à aujourd'hui. Le titre a conclu la conférence avec une première bande-annonce de gameplay, montrant de la chute libre, de la téléportation et des mécaniques de combat approfondies pour encore plus de possibilités. Comme vous le savez, The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild a été piraté sur PC peu de temps après sa sortie, ce qui fait que les moddeurs ont pu s'y intéresser. Aujourd'hui, Dario Rolle qui sévit sur YouTube entre autres dévoile un mod qui permet de jouer avec Linkle, en lieu et place de Link. Le bonhomme a pris le temps de soigner les expressions faciales de la demoiselle, sans oublier sa voix et autres exclamations sonores. Pour mémoire, Linkle est apparue pour la toute première fois dans Hyrule Warriors, et figurera bien sûr dans la Definitive Edition du jeu qui sortira sur Nintendo Switch ce printemps.

Excitement is at a fever pitch for the next instalment of The Legend of Zelda. Despite Breath of the Wild 2 not even having an official name yet, expectations are high. It’s probably no wonder though, the first Breath of the Wild was a huge success on Nintendo Switch, and with five years and counting since that, Nintendo’s had plenty of time to make a follow-up special. Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 – release date, rumours and more Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 has been teased in some form since E3 2019’s Nintendo Direct. It kept things very mysterious, but confirming to fans the sequel was in development. Since then, Nintendo went dark about the game until E3 2021. Then, we got our first gameplay trailer, which revealed the title would take inspiration from 2011’s The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword on the Wii. To that end, we saw Link soaring high above the clouds above Hyrule, skydiving below. At the time, Nintendo also gave the sequel a release window of 2022. It was almost certainly no coincidence that Nintendo would release a new HD version of Skyward Sword on the Switch a few months later. However, things went a little quiet once more until March of 2022. There, series producer Eiji Aonuma revealed the game wouldn’t make it out this year after all. Instead, as it stands, Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 will now release on the Nintendo Switch in Spring 2023. It’s also worth noting that, in all this time, Nintendo hasn’t given the new game a formal name. It’s always referred to Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 as Untitled The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild sequel. Presumably, it’ll have to call it something official soon, and we’ll let you know when it does. NOW READ Here’s what we want to see in the next Zelda game Until then, the game’s voice actors may have let slip a few details about the plot of The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild 2. You can read about those – but beware potential spoilers – just over here. What would we like to see in the next Zelda? The last game was a masterpiece, so any sequel will have its work cut out to better it. That being said, there are still a few areas we’d like to see improved or tweaked. We’ve done a detailed look into seven things we want to see in the new Zelda right here, but below is an abridged version, highlighting the two biggest areas in our view. More varied Shrines It’s a no brainer to assume these will come back for the sequel. The first game had a whopping 120 of them, but in the spirit of going bigger for the follow up, we’d not be opposed to more, at least a nice round 200 sounds good. Let us fix weapons! Weapon degradation was a key feature of Breath of the Wild – which basically gave every weapon in the game had a sort of health bar. I think most people would agree, it could be a little overzealous and left you with a tree branch to your name a little too often. There’s not too much to change here, but certainly some rebalancing wouldn’t go amiss. And an incredibly obvious-in-hindsight fix give us the option of repairing our weapons when they’re damaged! More Zelda The first Breath of the Wild saw Zelda take more of backseat role. She didn’t see a huge amount of action outside of cutscenes. In the sequel, we’d love to see more of her – perhaps actually having her as a playable character for the first time in the main series. She could have a different move set to Link, which would mix things up and add a new dimension to the gameplay. More modes of travel The trailer made it clear that Link would not just be exploring the land, but the skies above. The Master Cycle Zero was a badass bike you could use to traverse Hyrule. Acting as a sort of replacement for your horse, Link could even engage in mounted combat while riding it. It was great fun and we’d love to see it return! We’d love to see something similar but for the air in Breath of the Wild 2. Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 Graphics breakdown The trailer gave us the first look of the game in action – and we’re very impressed. It looks as though it’s running on the same custom base engine used to power the original game – although it’s certainly been tweaked and improved if the visuals are anything to go by. As mentioned earlier, there are rumours the trailer footage could be running on something more powerful than a standard Nintendo Switch – although these are just rumours. In our view, despite what look like volumetric clouds, impressive draw distances and impressive lighting, it’s not beyond realms of possibility that the footage is taken from a standard Nintendo Switch. Remember, this is a console that successfully runs The Witcher 3 and Doom, two traditionally graphically-intensive games, that look and run brilliantly on the Switch. Having played the latter extensively on both a high-powered PC and on Nintendo’s handheld, Doom was a technical marvel – especially in the indoor sections – demonstrating motion blur and a smooth framerate beyond what many thought the Switch was capable Price wise, BOT2 will likely retail for the same price BOTW was at launch, which will be about the £ /$ mark – although nothing has been confirmed. It’s likely using the same engine, albeit a tweaked version, with – what looked like – volumetric clouds and improved lighting shining in the gameplay trailer. Will BOTW2 come out in 2022? No, Nintendo confirmed that while a 2022 release date was one the cards at one stage, the game will release in Spring 2023. How much will BOTW2 cost? The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild offers freedoms I’ve not felt since Metal Gear Solid V, with a world sculpted with the detail of The Witcher 3, and the verticality of Monolith Soft’s Xenoblade Chronicles X. The combat has a touch of Dark Souls influence, and the survival and possibilities the world around you offers almost feel a tiny bit Minecraft inspired. It’s the best bits of many worlds, while still retaining that incredible charm and polish Nintendo are known for – with no bugs I noticed, too! In an open world game that heavily uses complicated physics for many puzzles. A rare delight. With a gorgeous world filled with seemingly infinite possibilities, it’s impossible not to recommend The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild. The long delays and wait has resulted in an incredibly polished freeform experience unlike any open world game I’ve ever played before.
